OPINION | Declare independence from the presidential monarchy

On Independence Day 2024, we as a nation will once again find America under the control of a monarchy. This astonishing turn of events is thanks to Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and the five other royalists on the Supreme Court who joined him in ruling to grant immunity to the President of the United States. In a blistering dissent against the “official” conduct for which he could be prosecuted if he were a private citizen, Justice Sonia Sotomayor said the majority’s decision made the president a “king above the law.”Thus, despite having overthrown King George III in 1783, two centuries later we have an American monarch with powers that previous tyrants would drool over.

If that wasn’t enough, the country is facing the possibility of twice-impeached felon and former president Donald Trump returning to the White House. The power that Trump wields is frightening. Let’s get rid of the idea that “we don’t know what he’ll do.” We know very well that Trump and his aides Said Tell me what he will do.

It is up to those who value and live by democratic values to stave off that danger. The courts will not do it. President Biden, healthy or not, cannot do it alone. Only we, the people, can do what is necessary: reject Trump and all he stands for at the polls on Election Day.

Indeed, just as in the last presidential election, the votes are being cast to keep Trump out of the Oval Office. Simply put, Trump cannot win with just his base of MAGA supporters and sympathizers, no matter how enthusiastic they may be.

There is no need to obsess now about who should be the Democratic Party’s standard-bearer. There is plenty of time to figure that out. And there is every chance that Biden, after careful consideration of his own health and ability to perform the job and after extensive consultations, will decide that now is the time to hand the baton to a capable successor.

I believe Biden will make the right decision. I became a senator around 1973 when Biden became a senator. Like other Washington watchers, I have seen Biden’s victories and setbacks over the years. Joe Biden is above all a patriot. He will do what is best for the country.

We would do well to stay focused and educate our family, friends and neighbors about the world that awaits them once Trump takes the oath of office.

Prosecution turns into persecution. The occupants of the suite will bend to Trump’s whims and power. Pardons and clemency will rain down like manna on the insurrectionists on January 6, 2021. Russian President Putin will once again have a friend in the White House and an ally against NATO and the West. Immigrants and people in Muslim-majority countries will face an aggressively hostile federal government. Civil rights and LGBTQ+ progress will stagnate. The economy will work for the haves to the detriment of the have-nots and those left behind. Ah, indeed. Trump will do everything in his power to create “black jobs,” his racist reference to jobs left for people of color.

So from now until Election Day, let’s focus on defeating Trump and restoring victory to the Democratic Party, no matter who comes out on top. The goal is to take control of the House and stop the Republican takeover of the Senate. Imagine Trump and a Republican-controlled Congress. Can you imagine a Republican-controlled House doing anything to restrain Trump? A Republican-controlled Senate doing anything other than agreeing to Trump’s underqualified and politically subservient appointees? Can the mule whistle? Armed with the Roberts ruling, dictator Trump will be able to operate with impunity.

And so we find ourselves on the Fourth of July, with our democracy at stake.

Let today be the day when a second Declaration of Independence is issued on behalf of a people who reject the notion of an imperial presidency and who respect democratic ideals and principles, and who pledge to defend our independence with our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor.
