However, the observance didn’t become common until after the War of 1812, after which it quickly gained popularity. Congress joined in late, finally passing a law on June 28, 1870, making Independence Day a federal holiday.

With the Fourth of July holiday falling on a Thursday, many Americans are taking Friday off and planning long weekend travel.
The AAA Automobile Club predicts that 70.9 million travelers will head to locations more than 50 miles from home during the holiday week, which runs from Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 7. The projected number of travelers during this period is 5% higher than last year and 8% higher than 2019.
AAA predicts that a record 60.6 million people will travel by car over the holiday, 2.8 million more than last year. AAA predicts that a record 5.74 million people will fly to Fourth of July destinations, about 7 percent more than last year and 12 percent more than 2019.
