Google’s Pixel 8 Pro
Google’s next-generation Pixel 9 family is expected to bring the latest AI software to consumers, but also push the boundaries when it comes to hardware, and now the future looks bright for the upgraded Pixel.
According to a new report from South Korean publication ETNews, Google will use Samsung’s latest display technology for its upcoming Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro smartphones.
Samsung’s premium smartphone, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, uses the company’s M13 series, while the next Pixel will be upgraded to the M14 series, whose main selling points are higher peak brightness levels and longer lifespan.
While not specifically mentioned, this likely uses a new dual-stack tandem technology for OLED panels, which uses two light-emitting panels stacked on top of each other. Individually the two panels emit lower levels of light, but when combined they result in a brighter panel. This allows the panel to operate more efficiently and reduces the rate at which the panel degrades.
These panels are starting to become available: Honor’s premium “Porsche Design” edition Honor Magic6 Pro, released in May, was one of the first smartphones to feature a dual-stack display, and Apple is using the technology in its latest iPad Pro tablets.
The Pixel 9 family is scheduled to debut in mid-August, and Google’s next flagship could be the first mainstream smartphone to feature these innovative displays.
