The Federal Aviation Administration has announced two new recipients of the Federal Government’s Airport Improvement Program.

$123 million from the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) was allocated to projects at more than 200 airports, while the Airport Infrastructure Grants (AIG) program awarded an additional $289 million to 129 airports across the country.

Both federal programs are part of bipartisan infrastructure legislation passed by the Biden administration and Congress in 2021.

AIP is currently in its second fundraising round, while AIG has already raised its seventh round.

“Americans are flying at record highs, and the Biden-Harris Administration will continue to invest in our airports to make travel safer and more convenient for the people who use them every day,” said U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg.

“This latest funding will support major improvements to terminals, runways and baggage systems, further strengthening the Administration’s ongoing efforts to modernize aviation infrastructure,” he added in announcing AIG’s award.

Major funding awards included $66.7 million to remove existing taxiways and build an expanded apron at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Runway and taxiway improvements are also the focus of $22.2 million directed to Philadelphia International Airport and $30.1 million awarded to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Apron and taxiway improvements have also been a key focus for many of the airports receiving grants, although the AIP fund is small and the individual grants reflect that.

$6.8 million will be used to upgrade existing tarmac at Miami International Airport, $4.6 million will be used to replace runway lighting and rebuild taxiways at Eastern Iowa Airport, and similar upgrades will be funded at Cape Girardeau Regional Airport in Missouri.

But airport infrastructure isn’t the only area to improve, with world-renowned John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California spending $3.8 million on two new passenger terminal escalators.

“This $123 million investment will help airports across the U.S. maintain and improve their critical infrastructure, promoting the safest, most efficient airport system in the world,” said Shanetta Griffin, FAA’s associate administrator for airports.

With the November presidential election looming, President Biden and his allies will be eager to push for federal spending.
