Bellingham and Kane help England come from behind to beat Slovakia 2-1 and reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2024

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany (AP) — Jude Bellingham scored a stunning overhead kick five minutes into added time to give England a 2-1 comeback victory in extra time against Slovakia and reach the quarterfinals of the European Championships. Bellingham’s overhead kick tied the score at 1-1 with seconds left in the round of 16 match at Veltins Arena. Harry Kane scored the winner with one minute of extra time to help England avoid one of the biggest shocks in Euros history. Ivan Schranz scored for Slovakia in the first half, and his goal looked like it would be enough to eliminate England, who were pre-tournament favorites and runners-up at the last Euros.

‘A Quiet Place’ prequel box office success shows Costner’s Western off to a shaky start

“A Quiet Place: Day One” is making headlines at the box office. The prequel earned an estimated $53 million in its opening weekend in North American theaters, according to studio estimates on Sunday. The same can’t be said for Kevin Costner’s self-financed “Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1,” which debuted with just $11 million. “Day One” also narrowly missed out on the top spot. That title once again went to Disney-Pixar blockbuster “Inside Out 2,” which earned an estimated $57.4 million in its third weekend in theaters. Box office revenues for 2024 are still down 19%.

Canadian airline strike affects tens of thousands of travelers, cancels more WestJet flights

TORONTO (AP) — An unexpected strike by WestJet aircraft mechanics entered its third day, canceling more than 800 flights over several days and affecting tens of thousands of passengers, Canada’s second-largest airline said. About 680 workers walked off the job Friday evening despite a directive from the federal labour minister for binding arbitration. The strike is taking place over the Canada Day long weekend, Canada’s busiest travel week of the year. The Aircraft Mechanics Association said Sunday the mechanics are “victims of a malicious PR campaign by WestJet to portray them as above the law.”

WELLFLET, Mass. (AP) — Animal rescuers were trying to move dozens of dolphins away from shallow waters around Cape Cod after they stranded there. Rescuers in Massachusetts found a pod of 10 Pacific white-sided dolphins swimming dangerously in shallow waters at dawn Saturday and successfully drove them into deeper waters, reports the International Fund for Animal Welfare. Rescuers also found another pod of 25 dolphins swimming close to shore near Eastham, where efforts to remove them continued throughout the morning as the tide went out. Ten dolphins died after stranding on The Gut (Great Island) on the Herring River in Wellfleet on Friday.

Yellowstone officials: Rare white buffalo sacred to Native Americans not seen since June 4th birth

Yellowstone National Park officials say a rare white buffalo, sacred to Native Americans, has not been seen since its birth on June 4. This is the first recorded birth of a wild white buffalo in Yellowstone’s history and a milestone in the bison’s eco-cultural restoration. This is an extremely rare event, with park officials confirming the birth. Wild white buffalo are born about once every million, or even less often, according to the park. The birth is the fulfillment of a Lakota prophecy and a harbinger of better times, but it also shows that more must be done to protect the planet and its animals.
