Confused about Trump support

I have never written an op-ed before, nor have I felt compelled to do so, when so many honest and respected people support the exact opposite candidate for President.

Why do so many people support former President Donald Trump?

Is it because of his high morals? Is it because of his character? It can’t be. Because he

• He makes a huge number of false statements. According to PolitiFact, of Trump’s 1,000 statements, 76% are mostly false, false, or “flat out lies” (not just false, but absurd). What’s more, those statements have an average rating of false, with over 70% of his statements about immigration, foreign policy, COVID-19, and healthcare rated false or worse, and 79% of his tweets rated false or worse.

• Have been accused of sexual abuse, been charged with fraud, or been convicted of a felony

• Be disrespectful towards people with disabilities, veterans, and women, and even use vulgar, insulting language.

Is it because he’s interested in border control? No, not at all, because he:

• They lie to incite fear rather than good judgment.

• Urged lawmakers to vote against a bipartisan deal to help Republican-led border enforcement.

Is it because he believes in American democracy? No, not at all, because he:

• He attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 election and continued to tout his victory even as the election-related lawsuits he filed conclusively failed.

• The Jan. 6 prisoners continue to call themselves hostages and patriots, despite being convicted of violent crimes.

• He praises Putin, saying he will be a “dictator from day one,” and threatens “bloodshed” if he loses.

• They have no respect for the law and will not accept that a democratic justice system rules against them.

Is it because he’s concerned about climate change and wants to make the planet a better place? No, it can’t be, because he:

• Denying the existence of global warming or climate problems

• Repeal laws aimed at protecting the environment.

Is it because he is a good example for young people? No, it is because his actions, decisions, plans and relationships all show a gross lack of morality.

why?

Trump supporters either believe him despite his proven lies or they don’t care that he lies. If these same supporters recall Hitler, they may see the similarities between the two men: charm, false promises, and a narcissistic personality. Is this a repeat of history that will happen to their country if Trump is re-elected? Do they really want that? Or are they afraid of intimidation, violence, and destruction if they don’t support him?

Trump supporters say the economy was better when Trump was president. In fact, the economy was on the upswing before Trump’s administration. It wasn’t born during Trump’s time in office, it was inherited. (I witnessed it firsthand when my late husband’s business thrived during that time.) After Trump’s administration, the current administration inherited a global COVID-19 pandemic and a national debt that ballooned by $8 trillion in just four years. We got through these in much better shape than most of the world, without the predicted recession. Stocks are at an all-time high, unemployment is at an all-time low, the number of uninsured Americans is falling, and the economy is slowly improving.

How do I answer the original question? Why do so many decent, respectable people support Trump? Frankly, I don’t know. I don’t believe that Trump’s supporters want bad things to happen in our country, but I’d be lying if I said I see the alignment of their values with this man’s actions.

If you believe in civility, stability, integrity and democracy, if you want to live in a country where you can express your opinions without fear of retribution, if you want someone who is a positive role model for young people, then as you vote in November, consider which candidates possess these characteristics.
