A six-foot-tall wax figure of American leader Abraham Lincoln in Washington DC has melted as the US experiences extreme heat.
The statue, which is modeled after the Lincoln Memorial, melted as temperatures in Northwest Washington soared to 100.4 degrees on Saturday. Richmond artist Sandy Williams IV installed the monument in February at Camp Barker Historic Site, on the grounds of Garrison Elementary School in Northwest Washington. BBC The statue is reportedly part of artist Williams IV’s “Wax Figure Series.”
According to a report published by East City Art In February of this year, artist Sandy Williams IV said, “Traditionally, monuments are made to stand and take on a patina, to endure change and immortalize a particular reality. I’m interested in building monuments that visualize change and leave a living record of activity. By melting down wax versions of famous monuments, I’m giving people free access to these forms that are normally (legally) untouchable.”
“Maybe making a wax figure of Lincoln during the first week of DC summer heat wasn’t such a good idea,” X-user Kirk A. Budd wrote while sharing the viral photo, which shows Lincoln’s head and right leg melted and his leg detached from his torso.

The photo was shared on June 24 and has been viewed 14.5 million times, with one user commenting, “You can work 16 hours and still look the same,” while another wrote, “This is how Americans will believe in climate change.”
“Three digits!! That’s weird in countries that don’t use Fahrenheit,” responded a third user.
