Cabinet Minister for ICT, Eliud Owalo, has called on youths to take advantage of the free Wi-Fi hotspots rolled out by government in public places to access online jobs.
Owalo, who spoke at the official opening of the Digital Lab at Mawego Technical Institute in Karachuonyo Constituency, called on youths to embrace the programme, asserting that it would help address the blue-collar job shortage.
“Internet connectivity is a top priority for the Kenya Kwanzaa programme to provide jobs to youth and women. The government is rolling out free Wi-Fi in markets and educational institutions,” Owalo said.
He encouraged them to enrol for training at relevant institutions to acquire the technical skills required for online employment.
Owalo stressed that accessing employment opportunities in the digital market through online platforms is the way forward for youths.
“Providing internet connectivity in both urban and rural areas is a key priority for the Kenya Kwanzaa administration to increase employment opportunities for youth,” Owalo stressed.
Minister Owalo stressed that his ministry has drawn up a comprehensive plan to ensure that every part of the country is connected to the internet.
The government has already made great strides in connecting different locations to the internet through various platforms, especially in Nyanza and Nairobi (City Market).
The government plans to register 25,000 similar facilities across the country.
The initiative aims to leverage the power of digital technology to close the unemployment gap.
With free Wi-Fi hotspots provided by the government, young Kenyans can access online job opportunities and broaden their prospects in the digital market.
