EU targets Apple App Store for first time with new digital competition rules

LONDON (AP) — European Union regulators are accusing Apple of violating new rules on digital competition by imposing rules that bar app makers from pointing users to cheaper alternatives on its App Store marketplace. The European Commission said Monday that preliminary findings of its investigation found the iPhone maker had violated the 27-nation EU’s digital markets law, a sweeping set of regulations aimed at preventing tech giants from dominating digital markets. The commission also opened a new investigation focused on new fees Apple is charging developers for installing apps from outside the App Store. Apple said it was “confident” its plans “comply with the law.”

Inside Out 2 breaks record by grossing $100 million in second weekend

NEW YORK (AP) — The second weekend was just as gratifying for “Inside Out 2.” The Pixar sequel grossed $100 million in ticket sales in its second weekend, setting a new record for an animated sequel in theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday. In about a week, “Inside Out 2” will likely break the $1 billion mark, making it the first movie to do so since “Barbie.”

Connor McDavid and the Oilers could make history in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Panthers

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers are coming off one of the biggest comebacks in sports history. After trailing 3-0 in the series, they’ve won three straight games and could win the Stanley Cup when they face the Florida Panthers in Game 7 of the finals on Monday night. The last NHL team to come back from such a deficit to hoist the Cup was the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1942. The Oilers are trying to negate as much of the impact of this improbable upset as possible by focusing on the season finale.

Mexico City neighborhood keeps iconic Volkswagen Beetle alive

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Volkswagen Beetle may have originated in Germany, but in a suburban Mexico City neighborhood, the “Bug” is king. Classic Beetles, or “bochos,” as they’re called in Mexicans, still line the streets of Cuautepec, so popular that the neighborhood has been nicknamed “bocholandia.” The Beetle has long been called “the people’s car” because it was considered cheap and reliable. Older models are in widespread use in Cuautepec because they’re one of the few cars that can get up the area’s steep hills. But mechanics in the area say the cars’ use is declining.

They were found separately by emergency personnel and pronounced dead at a hospital. The Pennsylvania couple were vacationing with their six children when they were caught in a rip current off Hutchinson Island on the Atlantic coast, authorities said.

Blue Jays’ Orelvis Martinez suspended 80 games for drug use two days after major league debut

NEW YORK (AP) — Toronto Blue Jays infielder Orelvis Martinez has been suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball after testing positive for the performance-enhancing drug clomiphene. The announcement came two days after the 22-year-old Martinez made his major league debut. Martinez issued a statement Sunday apologizing to the Blue Jays and fans and saying he visited a fertility clinic in the Dominican Republic and was prescribed treatments that included banned substances because he was trying to start a family with his girlfriend. Martinez has been on the Blue Jays’ 40-man roster since November 2022. He was 1-for-3 with 1 strikeout in Friday’s game against Cleveland.
