Only six movies have had better second weekends. The previous best second weekend for an animated film was “Super Mario Bros. The Movie” at $92 million. Just a week and a half later, “Inside Out 2” has become the highest-grossing movie of 2024 so far, grossing $724.4 million worldwide. In about a week, “Inside Out 2” will likely break the $1 billion mark, making it the first movie to do so since “Barbie.”

A New Mexico judge has denied a request for new testimony from the filmmakers in the Alec Baldwin trial.

(AP) — A New Mexico judge said prosecutors cannot use immunity to compel a film-set gunner to testify in the manslaughter trial of actor Alec Baldwin, who shot and killed a cinematographer during rehearsals for the Western movie “The Lust.” At a hearing Friday, the judge denied prosecutors’ requests to use immunity to compel Hannah Gutierrez-Reed to testify in other court proceedings. Gutierrez-Reed was convicted in March of manslaughter for shooting and killing cinematographer Halina Hutchins at a ranch where the film was set. Baldwin’s lawyers are also asking the judge to halt the trial on charges that the FBI destroyed evidence. He has pleaded not guilty.
38 dogs nearly drowned in Lake Mississippi, but fishermen made a hefty catch.
ATLANTA (AP) — Three fishermen rescued about 40 dogs from drowning in a Mississippi lake. The hounds had gone fox hunting and then chased a deer into the water. As their frantic owners looked on from the shore, the fishermen rushed to the scene and began pulling the dogs from the water. It took three trips to shore, but all the dogs survived. “There’s always an opportunity to save someone,” one of the fishermen said.

NEW YORK (AP) — A’ja Wilson leads Kaitlyn Clark by just over 1,000 votes in early fan voting for the WNBA All-Star game. Clark’s teammate, Indiana’s Aaliyah Boston, is third, 40,000 votes back from the top. Wilson is averaging 27.9 points and 11.3 rebounds this season and has garnered 217,773 votes. Clark is right behind with 216,427. New York’s Breanna Stewart is fourth and Dallas’ Aleke Ogunbowale is fifth. Chicago’s Angel Reese is the only other rookie in the top 10, at seventh. The All-Star game will be held in Phoenix on July 20, and will feature the WNBA All-Stars and the U.S. Olympic team.

They’re now celebrating a settlement that highlights a plan to decarbonize Hawaii’s transportation system over the next 20 years, the latest example of disaffected young people in the U.S. taking climate issues to court. The settlement is the first between a state government and young plaintiffs to address constitutional issues arising from climate change, according to the parties. The young people had argued that Hawaii was violating the state constitution by operating a transportation system that harms the climate.
Donald Sutherland, the legendary actor who played a wide range of roles from “MASH” to “The Hunger Games,” has died at the age of 88.

The Canadian actor’s career spanned everything from “MASH” to “JFK” to “The Hunger Games.” He was known for his quirky characters, epitomizing the unpredictable anti-establishment movies of the 1970s. But over the decades, Sutherland transitioned into a career as a respected character actor. He said he found those roles more challenging. He never stopped working, eventually appearing in about 200 films and series. He received an honorary Academy Award in 2017.
Retired Azzurri star Roberto Baggio was robbed at his home during Italy’s defeat to Spain
ROME (AP) — Retired Italian star Roberto Baggio was held at gunpoint in his home while watching a European Championship match against Spain. At least five armed robbers broke into Baggio’s villa near the northern city of Vicenza about 10 p.m. Thursday, according to Italian media reports. When the former soccer player confronted the robbers, one hit Baggio over the head with a gun butt. The robbers locked Baggio and his family in a room and stole jewelry, watches and cash. Italy lost 1-0 to Spain.
