Microsoft-backed OpenAI has acquired search and database analytics startup Rockset, founded by two Indian engineers, Venkat Venkataramani and Dhruva Borthakur, who studied engineering at Indian institutions. Rockset’s CEO, Venkataramani, is a student at NIT Tiruchirappalli, while CTO, Borthakur, is an alumnus of BITS Pilani.

Prior to founding Rockset, both founders worked as engineers at Facebook, and prior to Meta, Venkataramani worked at Oracle and Borthakur was at Yahoo.

What is Rockset?
Rockset is building a real-time search and analytics database that benefits from the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in a variety of applications, including chatbots and anomaly detection. Backed by Greylock, Sequoia and the venture capital arm of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Rockset has raised a total of $105 million in funding, the company announced last year.

What this allegation means for users
The companies have not yet disclosed the size of the deal, according to a Reuters report, which said OpenAI used its own stock to acquire Rockset in an all-stock deal that values it at hundreds of millions of dollars.

The report, citing sources familiar with the matter, claims the acquisition is one of the largest by fast-growing OpenAI, which reportedly valued Rockset at $86 billion in a tender offer made by investors earlier this year.

Rockset said its team will join OpenAI and its technology will power the search infrastructure of the ChatGPT-maker’s enterprise products. For users, the acquisition means faster and more accurate responses from OpenAI’s AI models.

Rockset’s capabilities will enhance OpenAI’s ability to quickly access and analyze vast amounts of information, a key advantage as the company will provide businesses with the tools for rapid data indexing and search.

Recently, Mira Murati, CTO of OpenAI, also predicted jobs that AI could take over. Speaking at his alma mater, Dartmouth College of Technology, Murati said the next generation of ChatGPT will have “PhD-level intelligence” for certain tasks. This advanced version is expected to be launched in late 2025 or early 2026.
