The Indian National Space Propulsion and Authorisation Centre (IN-SPACe) has launched the Pre-Incubation Entrepreneurship (PIE) Development Programme, a pioneering initiative aimed at supporting and nurturing early-stage space startups.
The 21-month program is designed to support the next generation of space technology innovators by providing them with the essential tools and guidance to turn their space-related ideas into viable businesses.
Who can apply to the PIE program?
The PIE program is aimed at students on technical courses or with a strong interest in space technology who are due to graduate in 2024 or are pursuing a master’s or doctoral program.
Additionally, early stage startups with a focus on space technology are also eligible. Applicants must not be receiving any grants, funding or financial support from any private or governmental program.
All entries must be original work and startups registered with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade of India (DPIIT) on or after July 1, 2022 will be classified as early-stage startups.
How does the PIE program support entrepreneurs?
The PIE program offers a comprehensive journey divided into distinct stages: ideation, innovation and prototype development.
Aspiring entrepreneurs receive structured support at each critical stage of their growth. They benefit from direct access to skilled mentors from industry veterans, subject matter experts, leading research institutes, incubators, academia and prominent space industry players.
This access provides valuable insight, feedback and networking opportunities that are essential for navigating the complexities of the space industry.
What are the goals and expected outcomes of the PIE program?
The program aims to foster a culture of innovation among entrepreneurs and advance scientific advancements that generate socio-economic benefits and contribute to broader economic development. “India’s space sector is poised to grow exponentially and young entrepreneurs will be crucial in driving this expansion,” said Dr. Pawan Goenka, Chairman, IN-SPACe.
“The PIE program provides them with a launch pad and equips them with not only the technical expertise but also the business acumen needed to navigate the complexities of the space industry.”
The initiative is expected to create new job opportunities in India’s space sector and strengthen the country’s leadership in the global space industry.
