BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – Today’s forecast: Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected today, but rainfall will be less than Monday as tropical moisture slowly moves southwest.

High temperatures will range from the upper 80s to near 90°F in most areas.

Winds will increase due to a strengthening pressure gradient between the tropical pressure over the southern Gulf of Mexico and high pressure to the east. Easterly winds will be strong at 10 to 20 mph, with higher gusts likely.

Rest of the Week
Potential Tropical Depression No. 1 is slowly moving toward Mexico, sucking up most of the tropical moisture south of the region, while at the same time making it drier and hotter as high pressure strengthens.

Friday through the weekend, high temperatures are expected to reach the mid-90s Fahrenheit with only a 20 to 30 percent chance of precipitation.
Expansion Outlook
The weather outlook beyond the weekend will depend heavily on a new surge of tropical moisture potentially affecting parts of the Gulf Coast. With so much uncertainty, it’s too early to give specifics, but at this point we are expecting a slightly increased chance of precipitation and near-normal high temperatures.

Tropical Update
Potential Tropical Depression No. 1 continues to rotate in the southern Gulf of Mexico this morning. Conditions are generally favorable for development, but so far it has struggled to form an inner core and has remained loosely organized. Still some organization is expected, and it could become Tropical Storm Alberto before reaching Mexico in the coming days.
On a map you don’t see often, the National Hurricane Center has highlighted the area where PTC #1 is currently located as an area where another hurricane could develop by the weekend. As of Tuesday morning, the probability is listed as 20%. There is a lot of uncertainty about what or if anything will develop in this area, so we’ll just keep an eye on developments this week.
Finally, the NHC continues to monitor the eastern Florida area but only lists a 20% chance of development. The system is expected to move generally west to west-northwest over the next few days.
