SANA’A, June 11, 2024 (Saba) – A national programme to combat the phenomenon of begging reached a key milestone this Tuesday with the conclusion of a comprehensive training plan aimed at reintegrating participants into society, starting businesses and achieving economic independence.

Over the course of three weeks, the program aimed to equip 102 participants with the skills necessary for reintegration, entrepreneurship and small-scale project management, with the ultimate goal of empowering participants to take control of their own economic destiny within the framework of the program’s overarching vision.

In his closing remarks, Yasser Sharaf Al-Din, Executive Director of the National Program, highlighted the program’s efforts to lift targeted vulnerable groups out of the throes of extreme poverty and guide them towards legitimate livelihoods. He stressed that the program’s graduates, skilled in reintegration and small-scale project management, are a testament to the transformative potential of zakat to impact the lives of citizens.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Sami Sharaf Al-Din, Undersecretary for Sanaa, and Mohammed Al-Ayani, Undersecretary for the General Authority for Zakat, who praised the program’s tireless efforts to improve the quality of life of vulnerable groups through rehabilitation and training, as well as economic independence through income-generating businesses.

Al Ayani praised the program’s noble efforts in respecting the dignity of individuals and stressed the shared responsibility of government and social organizations in empowering this vulnerable population. He commended Abdul Malik Al Houthi for his leadership in rescuing beggars from their plight and leading them to gainful employment, thereby safeguarding their dignity and self-respect.

Al Ayani further affirmed the Zakat Authority’s unwavering support for the program’s efforts to tackle the scourge of begging, and expressed optimism that with careful planning and collaborative efforts with relevant authorities, thousands more people could be rehabilitated and empowered.

Adel Hizam delivered an inspiring speech on behalf of the trainees, stating that the entrepreneurship training and skills acquisition had instilled new self-confidence and faith in Providence among the participants. He lauded the programme’s focus on economic independence and the creation of small businesses, which has provided concrete livelihood paths for the beneficiaries.

Hizam reiterated the trainees’ shared determination to work hard on their respective projects and strive to earn a decent living and provide for their families through hard work.
