Why is “Garfield is dead” trending?

The phrase “Garfield dies” began trending on X as many users tweeted their reactions to the cartoon cat’s death.

It all started on June 5, 2024, when a Garfield fan account tweeted a message posing as the cat’s fictional owner, Jon, announcing that Garfield had passed away.

@GarfieldFanArt tweeted, “Hey everyone, it’s Jon. Garfield passed away in his sleep last night after eating at the Olive Garden buffet.”

“It was so sudden and we’re still in shock. We don’t know how it happened but we didn’t want to give you all any notice. Thank you.”

The tweet has been viewed more than six million times and garnered over 1,000 replies from Garfield fans reacting to the so-called news.

“On a Tuesday? Everyone thought Monday was the problem,” one user replied, referencing Garfield’s iconic dislike of Mondays.

A second user added: “They killed Garfield.”

Others weren’t so easily fooled by the unofficial account, with a third user saying: “Haha, nice try John. Olive Garden doesn’t have a buffet.”

When was Garfield created?

Garfield first appeared in a Jim Davis comic strip in 1978. The strip debuted in 41 newspapers across the United States.

Davis told the Guardian that the comic book character was named after his grandfather, James Garfield Davis.

His grandfather “was quite strict and intimidating, but he had such kind eyes. He was like a teddy bear,” he said.

By 1983, over 1,000 newspapers were carrying Garfield comic strips.

In 2002, the manga was recognized by the Guinness World Records as the most widely distributed manga in the world.

Since his birth, the orange tabby cat has had nine lives.

Garfield has appeared in several films, including Garfield the Movie in 2024. He is voiced by Chris Pratt.

Since 1983, Garfield has also been a mainstay in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Davis continues to work on new Garfield cartoons.
