The Palo Alto City Council has allocated a $10,000 grant to support the health care of three beloved donkeys living in Volpark in Northern California, including Perry, who was the inspiration for the iconic character Donkey from the famous “Shrek” film series.
The decision to provide additional funding comes as the adorable animals are aging and the park recently added a new donkey to its roster. Perry, 30, lives with Buddy, 24, and April, 15, and they form a treasured trio that has won the hearts of locals and tourists, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Head donkey keeper Jenny Kiratoli explained to the Los Angeles Times the growing financial burden of caring for the donkeys: “Just a few years ago, our annual budget for caring for the donkeys was about $12,000 to $15,000, but with the addition of a third donkey and new diseases, our costs have risen to $40,000 a year,” Kiratoli explained.
Officials did not say how much of the budget would go towards treats such as parfaits, a favorite food of the donkeys.
