Katrina Pierson, who served as Donald Trump’s spokeswoman during the 2016 presidential election, is expected to win the Republican primary runoff election in Texas’ 33rd State Congressional District, CNN is predicting.
Pearson defeated Dallas-area incumbent state Rep. Justin Holland and, with no Democratic candidate running, is all but certain to win the general election in November.
Pierson was a highly visible surrogate during Trump’s first presidential campaign, appearing regularly on cable television to defend Trump and promote his bid for the White House. After the 2020 election, she played a key role in the “Stop the Steal” movement, which falsely claimed Joe Biden’s victory was illegitimate due to widespread fraud.
“We expect the President to do something intimate at Ellis and encourage everyone to march to the Capitol,” Pearson wrote in an email to fellow rally organizers on Jan. 2, 2021. Four days later, Trump’s speech at Ellis sparked the Capitol riots.
She ultimately testified before the committee on Jan. 6, and her text messages offered insight into the roles of various advisers to President Trump in the lead up to the storming of the Capitol.
Earlier this election cycle, Pearson did not say whether he would support Trump again.
“This is a primary. I’m a grassroots person. At the end of the day, it’s in my nature to endorse somebody,” she said in March 2023. Pearson added that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who had not yet launched his ultimately unsuccessful bid for the White House, “has a lot of great ideas.”
During her state legislative campaign, Pearson openly supported education vouchers, a signature policy of Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott, while Holland opposed them.
