Rapper Sean Kingston agreed to move back to Florida where he and his mother were indicted on $1 million fraud charges.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Rapper and singer Sean Kingston has agreed to return to Florida, where he and his mother are charged with fraud of more than $1 million. Kingston, 34, signed papers Tuesday in San Bernardino County Court waiving his right to fight extradition. He will now be returned to Broward County, Florida, where his 61-year-old mother is free on bond. Arrest warrants say the pair stole cash, jewelry, a Cadillac Escalade and furniture. Their lawyer said after their arrest last week that they look forward to fighting the charges in court.

Golfers are calling for millions to abandon Ohio’s World Heritage site with ancient Native American ties

NEWARK, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio Historical Society is close to gaining control of an ancient ceremonial and burial earthworks currently maintained by a country club whose members play golf by the hills. A trial is set to begin Tuesday to determine how much the historical society should pay for the site, one of eight ancient areas of the Hopewell Earthworks system designated a World Heritage Site last year. The Ohio Historical Society won a state Supreme Court ruling that allows it to recover the lease held by the country club and turn the site into a public park.

Gender identity measure fails to qualify for California ballot

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A proposed California bill that would have required California schools to notify parents if their child wanted to change gender at school failed on the November ballot. The measure had only garnered about 400,000 signatures out of more than 500,000 by Tuesday. Supporters of the policy say it would provide needed transparency for parents. But opponents say it could put children’s safety at risk if they don’t have a welcoming family. The issue has become part of a national debate over the rights of local school districts, parents and LGBTQ+ students.

Review: “Robot Dreams” is deeper than it deserves

“Do you remember?” asks “Robot Dreams,” just as the song “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire asks. It’s a sweet, pensive little movie that, like a good pop song, expresses something profound without wasting words, Associated Press film writer Jake Coyle wrote in his review. Directed by Pablo Berger, the film is a wordless animation about a dog and a robot that evokes something poignant about loved ones who come and go. Oddly enough, it’s also a film for all ages. Though very kid-friendly, the older generation may find it most enchanting because of how mature its portrayal of human relationships is. “Robot Dreams,” nominated for an Oscar for best animated film, hits theaters on Friday.

Two women accuse NFL kicker Brandon McManus of sexual assault

Two women are suing NFL kicker Brandon McManus, alleging they were sexually assaulted while working as flight attendants on a transatlantic trip with McManus and the Jacksonville Jaguars last year. The women, identified as Jane Doe I and Jane Doe II in court documents filed Friday in Florida, accuse McManus of rubbing up against them during the flight to London and that the Jaguars failed to supervise McManus or create a safe environment for staff serving the team. They are seeking more than $1 million in damages. McManus’ lawyers called the allegations “completely false and patently misleading.”

Melinda French Gates to donate $1 billion over the next two years to support women’s rights

Melinda French Gates said she will donate $1 billion over the next two years to individuals and organizations working for women and families around the world, including reproductive rights in the United States. French Gates is one of the largest philanthropic supporters of gender equality in the United States. In an essay for The New York Times on Tuesday, she wrote that for years she has been frustrated by people who say now is not the time to talk about gender equality. She said she has begun making new grants through her organization, Pivotal Ventures, in the past few weeks.

National Spelling Bee contestants try to overcome weaknesses such as ‘super short, difficult words’

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) — Shraddha Ratchamreddy won third place in last year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee with a four-letter word. The 14-year-old from San Jose, California, is back as one of 245 spellers for this year’s bee, which began Tuesday at a convention center outside Washington. Like other spellers hoping to win, Shraddha tried to learn from her mistakes. She spent part of this year studying the words she often gets wrong. The competition ends Thursday night, with the winner receiving a trophy and more than $50,000 in cash and prizes.

Stewart-Haas Racing to shut down NASCAR team at end of 2024 season, says it’s time to ‘pass the baton’

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Stewart-Haas Racing will close its NASCAR team at the end of the 2024 season. The announcement comes after nearly a year of rumors that the four-car Cup Series team planned to sell its charter and downsize or quit the series altogether. Gene Haas founded the team in 2002 and brought Stewart on as co-owner before the 2009 season. Stewart gave the team its first Cup Series win in its debut season and its first Cup title in 2011. Kevin Harvick won his second championship in 2014. The move also affects the two-car Xfinity Series team.

Lexi Thompson, a 15-time winner on the LPGA Tour, is retiring from full-time golf at age 29.

LANCASTER, Pa. (AP) — Lexi Thompson is retiring from full-time competition at age 29. Thompson announced the decision Tuesday ahead of the U.S. Women’s Open, which will be her 18th appearance, despite still being in her 20s. Thompson is known for her incredible distance off the tee and her bad luck in majors. She has won 15 times on the LPGA Tour, but only one major title, the Kraft Nabisco Championship. At age 12, she set the record for the youngest player to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Open and, at age 16, the youngest player to win an LPGA tournament. Both records have since been broken.
