Now that the dust has settled around the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, it’s time to bring you up to speed on the major talking points.

Red Bull have revealed just how much of a blow their pockets have been caused by Sergio Pérez’s dramatic crash alongside the Haas car in Monaco. Luckily their camera crews were not caught up in the mayhem. Here’s our round-up of F1 news from Monaco Monday…

Sergio Perez Red Bull accident damages over 2 million

After being hit from behind by Haas’ Kevin Magnussen on the way up the Saint-Devote hill, Perez rolled like a pinball between the barriers with only the survival cell of his Red Bull RB20 still intact, and it was a huge relief to see him walk away unscathed.

Red Bull, of course, did not escape unscathed, with senior advisor Helmut Marko claiming that the incident has cost the team “between two and three million dollars”, which is far from ideal for Red Bull in the era of cost caps.

Cameramen gathered at the scene of impact as Perez hit the barrier, but got much closer than they had anticipated, and footage showed the force of the impact as debris flew and cameramen fled.

The trackside photographer was taken to the medical centre and an FIA spokesman told media that he had no open wounds.

Esteban Ocon may be dropped from Canadian team

The first lap of the Monaco Grand Prix was packed with incidents, including contact between the two Alpine cars and Esteban Ocon being sent flying into the air and then dropping out while trying to get inside team-mate Pierre Gasly at Portier.

Team principal Bruno Famine has been furious with Ocon, with Famine reportedly “seriously” considering benching him for the Canadian Grand Prix as a result.

Lewis Hamilton makes ‘I told you so’ message clear

When the race was red-flagged after some opening lap mayhem, Hamilton sent a “I told you guys” message over Mercedes’ team radio on his way to the pit lane, sparking much debate about what he meant.

Hamilton denied rumours that this was a reference to him not being happy with his start on the hard tyre – rather he was referring to him expecting an accident.

Lewis Hamilton and Damon Hill discuss how to spice up the Monaco Grand Prix

As feared, overtaking was key in Monaco, with a new F1 record being set when the top 10 on the grid finished the race in the same position.

Hamilton was among the drivers offering advice on how to change that, suggesting “three mandatory pit stops”, while Damon Hill also floated the idea of a lighter, shorter car.
