Josef Newgarden won the 108th running of the Indianapolis 500, overtaking Pato O’Ward on the final lap of the race to become the first driver to win back-to-back races since 2002.

The start of Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 was delayed due to rain, but the race finally got underway about four hours after the scheduled start and went as expected.

There were 49 changes of 18 leaders and eight cautions, the first of which involved former F1 driver and 2022 Indy 500 winner Marcus Ericsson.

Tom Blomqvist caused a multi-car crash on the first lap of the 200-lap race, taking Ericsson and Haas F1 reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi out of the race.

Seven more cautions and 194 laps later, O’Ward passed Newgarden for the lead, but the Penske driver fought back the very next lap.

O’Ward’s challenge didn’t end there, as once the white flag was waved he went around the outside of Newgarden at Turn 4 and took the lead at Turn 1 on the final lap.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon finished third.

“There’s no better way to win a race,” Newgarden said. “I have to applaud Pato. He’s an incredibly clean driver. He could have easily won this race. Luck was on our side.”

Former F1 driver Alexander Rossi finished in fourth place, Takuma Sato in 14th place and Romain Grosjean in 19th place.
