Chelsea co-owner Todd Boley was delighted to see Mauricio Pochettino stay, but Behdad Egbali is “lukewarm” to the idea, according to reports.

Pochettino has left Chelsea by mutual consent, the Premier League club confirmed on Tuesday night.

According to a report in Standard Sport, the Blues are interested in appointing Brighton-linked Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna, with priority given to young, progressive coaches.

Brentford’s Thomas Frank, Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness, Burnley’s Vincent Kompany and Girona’s Michel are also reportedly considered, with former manager Thomas Tuchel not believed to be under consideration. ing.

Pochettino’s sacking was a bit of a surprise considering Chelsea’s form in the second half of the season.

Despite spending most of the 2023/24 season in mid-table, the Blues finished sixth in the Premier League and qualified for the Europa League.

Pochettino’s ‘outdated’ training methods contributed to Chelsea’s sacking

There was a time during the season when it seemed likely that Pochettino would be sacked, but the Guardian explains why the decision was taken now.

Journalist Jacob Steinberg said the breakup between Argentina and the Blues was due to “differences of opinion over strategy”.

Pochettino had “failed in his attempts to give him more power” and both sides believed it made more sense to part ways now, with “no intention of giving more power” to the manager, “rather than risking the possibility of having a major impact on next season,” beyond the autograph signing session.

Unsurprisingly, there was “support” for the manager within the board, but this was “not unanimous and Egbali is understood to have had a ‘lukewarm’ attitude towards Pochettino.”

One of the reasons for Pochettino’s downfall was that the board “had concerns about his tactics”, with sources telling the website that his training methods were “outdated”.

Mauricio Pochettino ‘concerned’ about Chelsea’s ‘day-to-day run’

ESPN reports that the Blues hierarchy has been “divided for some time” over Pochettino’s future after the club have failed to compete for Champions League qualification despite spending £1 billion since buying Borough Clearlake Capital in May 2022.

As reported by the Guardian, it is also said that “Bailey was keen for Pochettino to stay, but Egbali wanted to replace him with a new manager.”

Despite the positive end to the season, the Chelsea board “expected faster progress given the significant investment we have made in the players”.

The former Spurs manager also stated, “I was concerned about the lack of clarity regarding the day-to-day management of the club and future plans.”
