Sea Road School students earn rewards in stock market game

Sea Road School fifth-graders Josh Perdue and Mason Cameron recently placed first and second, respectively, in the annual stock market game sponsored by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA), an educational nonprofit organization. Ta.

The fifth-graders competed in the Maine Elementary Division in Spring 2024. Searoad School Principal Corey Steer said the students’ teacher, Allison Laflamme, did an outstanding job of guiding the students to apply complex skills in real-world scenarios.

“This is a great example of how our students are ‘real world ready’ and learning necessary and in-demand knowledge that will help them as they enter life at RSU 21 and beyond,” Steer said. he said.

The Stock Market Game is a widely used financial education program that introduces students to the global capital markets through an integrated curriculum and dynamic online market simulation.

Students are given a mock $100,000 to invest in the real-time stock market using critical thinking, research, and analytical skills. The top two students or teams with the highest portfolios win that category.

This is the third year that Sea Road School teacher Alison Laflamme has taught her students the program, but this is the first time two of her students have won the entire competition.

“As soon as we introduced them to this unit and got them set up, they were hooked,” Laflamme said.

The students checked their investments every day outside of class and came to class with new stocks to invest in. As the top two winners of the competition, both Pardue and Cameron received medals, certificates and prizes from the Stock Market Game Foundation.

“I should take my 11-year-old son’s advice and invest in the stock market,” said Craig Cameron, Mason Cameron’s father.

This game aims to develop a fundamental understanding of investing while providing students with practical skills through a fun and challenging experience.

“I am so proud of Josh and Mason for winning this prestigious competition,” Mr Steer said.
