TOPEKA (KSNT) – Do you have strong feelings about electric vehicle (EV) charging on Kansas roadways? If so, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) would like to hear from you.
KDOT announced in a press release on May 15 that it is seeking feedback from the state of Kansas on its National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) charge-up plan. All states must create a NEVI plan to receive funds. The plan outlines how Kansas will use funding to support the deployment of on-road charging infrastructure.
According to KDOT, Kansas received approximately $40 million in funding over five years for the NEVI program as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). This is part of the bipartisan infrastructure law signed into law by President Joe Biden in 2021, which provides $1.2 trillion in transportation and infrastructure spending and $550 billion in new investments and programs nationwide. It is recognized that the amount can be allocated. Agencies and communities within the Sunflower State are eligible to apply for additional funding through the $2.5 billion discretionary program.
KDOT is currently conducting a second round of calls for proposals for EV charging infrastructure projects. In the first round of funding announced earlier this year, Gov. Laura Kelly said more than $4.6 million in federal funding would be directed to the first six locations in the state’s NEVI plan, including:
- Emporia, Flying J, 4215 W. Hwy 50
- Garden City, Love’s 3285 E. US Hwy 50
- Cherokee, Pete, 20 US 400
- Pete’s 2400 E. Washington Street, Fredonia
- Love’s 1356 US Hwy 81, Belleville
- Pratt, Casey’s, 1900 E. 1st Street
