People are wondering why a former district court judge would take advantage of retirement to run for political office after being out of politics for over 23 years (for professional reasons). I hope this short commentary for voters in Minnesota House District 3B sheds some light on that.
First, some background. I am a lifelong resident of Northeastern Minnesota and graduated magna cum laude from Duluth Denfeld High School, the University of Minnesota Duluth, and Mitchell Hamline School of Law. My wife René Privet Mangal (formerly a Guardian ad litem) and I have been married for 46 years, have lived in the Friedenberg area for over 40 years, raised four sons, and are the proud grandparents of six children. During my legal career, I went into private practice as a trial attorney and also served as Proctor City Attorney and Prosecutor for his 14 years. In 1998, I was elected District Court Judge for the Sixth Judicial District (St. Louis, Carleton, Cook, and Lake Counties). During my judicial career, I have handled all types of cases that come before district courts, from mediation courts to medical malpractice, traffic tickets to first-degree murder cases, boundary disputes to child protection matters. . I learned the life stories of many of my neighbors in the Arrowhead area and made decisions that affected their lives. As a lawyer defending my clients and as a judge dispensing justice, I have striven to work with compassion, empathy, and insight, qualities that I hope will serve the voters of Minnesota House District 3B. I believe it will be helpful.
I am a passionate outdoorsman, gardener, hunter, fisherman, canoeist, skier, traveler, author (published 14 books), person of faith (currently co-executive director of Grace ELCA in Hermantown), and is a board member of the Greater Denfeld Foundation. I am also a member of the Voyageur Scouting Council’s Advancement Committee, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, and the Sierra Club. I am an Eagle Scout and honorably discharged from the United States Army Reserve.
To the question: why? I am deeply concerned about the state of our politics and the future we are building for our grandchildren. I believe I can be a leader who brings integrity, passion, and purpose to the Minnesota Legislature as we devise solutions to difficult problems for a positive and brighter tomorrow for all Minnesotans.
I look forward to meeting you, listening to your concerns, and being your advocate in St. Paul.
