This entrepreneur won $100,000 to open his first store in Detroit.

what’s happening: Another year, another $100,000 was awarded to a Detroit entrepreneur working to open a brick-and-mortar store in the city. Tiffany Cartwright and her GLAM body scrub business won the Grand Prize at her 2024 Comerica Hatch Detroit Contest by TechTown.

what is that: GLAM Body Scrubs was founded in 2018 by Tiffany Cartwright and operates her business from her home and online. A confluence of events led to the creation of GLAM, including Cartwright losing his job and his daughter’s recent diagnosis of eczema. Cartwright developed a natural, organic body scrub from her kitchen in hopes of relieving her daughter’s eczema without exposing her to the harsh chemicals found in mass-produced skin treatments. Did. A business was soon established.

How she does it: As her business takes off, Cartwright can find GLAM products at her local Target and Walmart stores. She has used her success to provide jobs, training, and mentorship to underserved populations and to uplift others in her community. The group is made up of women who have been victims of domestic violence and human trafficking, as well as returnees.

Her destination: Mr. Cartwright will use the $100,000 grand prize to open a GLAM Body Scrub storefront in Detroit’s Rosedale Park community. Founded in 2011, the Hatch Detroit Contest was launched to help local entrepreneurs open their first brick-and-mortar store in Detroit, Hamtramck, or Highland Park.

Bonus business: Cartwright competed against three other finalists on Thursday, May 9, at the final hatchoff event at the Wayne State University Industrial Innovation Center in Detroit. His three runner-up businesses will receive his $10,000 grant to open their own stores. This award is provided courtesy of the TechTown Small Business Support His Hub grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. These include Harry Rich Clothier, Khana, and Roller Skate Detroit.
