I hope the title conveys that chant.
Over the past few weeks, the Biden administration and Florida Democrats have backed up their optimism with effort and money. I want to build on the excitement that’s happening in our state right now. This is the most motivated I’ve seen the Florida Democratic Party since 2012.
I moved to Tampa in 2005 at the age of 17 to attend the University of Tampa on a music education scholarship. Since then, I’ve had a front-row seat to observe changes in Florida elections in my work as an educator, learning consultant, and voter outreach organizer.
Just over a month ago, the Florida Supreme Court ruled that Amendments 3 and 4, which directly address access to marijuana and access to abortion, will be on the ballot in 2024. These rulings make a huge difference to his November election. Florida has a history of constitutional referenda that is worth revisiting.
In 2018, Florida restored the rights of approximately 1.5 million voters through a publicly approved constitutional amendment. Florida’s Republican establishment found this unacceptable and moved to ensure the state received compensation before restoring rights. Formerly incarcerated citizens live with severe economic consequences, and numerous studies show that the rewards of integration far exceed the rewards of collecting state fees.
Our national system is visibly giving its thumbs up to frustrate the most vulnerable. This is not unique to Florida. Across the country, gerrymandering, court packing, and more are occurring with conservative legal outcomes. Public intervention is needed to stop this.
In Florida, Democrats, young people, and leftists are increasingly responding. The 2022 Florida election had the largest margin of victory for any political party, Republican or Democratic, in recent Florida history. Republicans overwhelmingly defeated Democrats across the Sunshine State. we can’t get tired. Abandoning one’s beliefs because of difficulties ensures defeat.
As a medical marijuana patient, I’m excited about the recreational marijuana bill. Fix 3 includes several important improvements. Under current Florida law, possession of more than 20 grams but less than 25 pounds of marijuana is a felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. Possession of her THC extract in distillate or other forms is a severe felony.
Florida’s stretched police resources should be focused on bigger problems than marijuana possession. Florida, a state with a rapidly expanding population, has more pressing legal issues than harassing ineligible marijuana users. This referendum will energize and bring out our base.
Similarly, the Fourth Amendment provides a resolution for the Florida Republican Party’s voter waivers. Florida Republicans have staked their farms on the DeSantis presidential election time and time again. After the defeat, Governor DeSantis’ salary was also increased. They passed his restrictive abortion ban because they thought air time on Fox News was better for their careers than serving their constituents.
Republican Attorney General Ashley Moody submitted the amendment to the Florida Supreme Court, anticipating a partisan clash. Florida Democrats are now stunned that our nation’s judges have ruled against the Attorney General.
The Florida Republican Party’s efforts to override the will of voters have taken their toll. Year after year, the Florida Legislature has made a show of the people’s wishes. Conditions decided by narrow margins are reaching a breaking point.
Our campaign in Florida’s 65th District aims to power the ground war on I-4. These are the trench lines to save American democracy. Support our efforts to strengthen the Democratic Party and redefine how Floridians are represented.
