Since Oliver Glasner replaced Roy Hodgson in February, Crystal Palace have won twice as many points as Manchester United.
At the time of Roy Hodgson’s departure, the club were 16th in the Premier League table. At the time, they had lost 10 of their last 16 games and looked in danger of being sucked into the relegation zone.
Hodgson made an immediate impact on his return to Selhurst Park last season, guiding the team into midfield safety following the sacking of Patrick Vieira, but he began to feel sluggish midway through the 2023-24 season. has begun.
“Wasted potential. Weak decision-making, both on and off the pitch. Taking us backwards,” read a banner from the Palace faithful. The banner was put up at the Emirates Hotel during a particularly low period, when the club lost 5-0 to Arsenal in January.
Palace have been at the top of the table for 11 seasons, never finishing higher than 10th, with a modest but respectable average of between 40 and 50 points.
That momentum will continue into the 2023-24 season, and under new manager Glasner they are showing true potential as a side that can punch above their weight to challenge for European status next season.
The 49-year-old Austrian has done a sensational job so far, aided by the presence of star men Eberechi Eze and Michael Oliseh, who were largely absent during Hodgson’s final months as manager.
Olise and Eze have had some great performances of late, but striker Jean-Philippe Mateta looks like a transformed player under Glasner. The Frenchman has scored nine goals in his last 10 Premier League games and was rightly named the club’s player of the season.
Glasner led Palace to 21 points in his 12 Premier League games since taking over. They are currently unbeaten in their last six games and have played some brilliant football, including wins over Wolves, Manchester United, Newcastle and Liverpool.
