A Rio Grande Valley nonprofit is partnering with NASA for a unique opportunity.

The nonprofit is called Expanding Frontiers and is a technology incubator located in Brownsville. Their mission is to help local entrepreneurs develop and launch businesses using space and energy technologies.

Expanding Frontiers will begin a six-month program called NASA Tech Trek next month.

“Our goal with NASA Tech Trek is to help people and entrepreneurs streamline the process of starting a business, and therefore, we want to help people and entrepreneurs create opportunities to do business using NASA technology. We want to show people that we’re a business,” said William Brown, a member of Expanding Frontiers. “We want them to have experience in case they don’t have a business background or haven’t done something similar. So the way we achieve this is that they We will be hosting a kick-off event where you can talk to panelists and speakers about these activities, and we will be holding some workshops and hackathons immediately afterward, so you can familiarize yourself with NASA technology and do business. You get to bring your ideas to life, work with your team to develop them, and then meet with your mentors at NASA. And then, as you build on those ideas, you’ll finally pitch them to investors in November. , you will be able to obtain funding to start your business.”

Best of all, Brown says the program is free and open to everyone.

“This program has the potential to be very transformative, not only for people interested in entrepreneurship, but also for the Valley and for South Texas. The fact that NASA is offering to help us because it’s the only program of its kind, NASA has expressed interest in South Texas and reached out to us to lead this program, “It feels really innovative to do something like this because we want people to be a part of it,” Brown said.
