Growing up in a small town in Cambodia, Diamond Ting was inspired to become a business owner by her parents and grandparents, whom she calls her role models and motivation. After moving to Lowell, he began attending Middlesex Community College to earn an associate’s degree in business entrepreneurship. Recently, he received a scholarship from the Cummings Foundation to help launch his idea for a business.
“Receiving the Cummings Scholarship means a lot not only to me but also to my family, as it will help reduce tuition and living expenses,” Ting said. “My business pitch for this scholarship was about an escape room project that I am currently working on with my cousin to open in Cambodia.”
The scholarship is part of a $100,000 grant the foundation awarded to Middlesex in spring 2021. The grant supports students like Ting who are pursuing MCC’s entrepreneurship certificate or associate degree and have business ideas they would like to launch in the future.
“We are looking for students who are eager to explore, complete their studies and, in some cases, begin an entrepreneurial journey,” said Stacey Hargis, MCC Entrepreneurship Program Coordinator. “We are very fortunate to receive funding from the Cummings Foundation, which allows us to support up-and-coming entrepreneurs in such an important way.”
Ms. Ting is grateful to Mr. Hargis for supporting her in her entrepreneurship class. Hargis motivates Ting by pushing her to work outside of her own comfort zone and reminding her of her passion for business and pursuing a career she loves. Ms. Ting, who is currently in her second semester at MCC, is excited to attend class every day, participate in discussions, and help her classmates.
MCC has been a “welcoming space” for Ting since joining the company, which has allowed him to be less nervous about exploring new areas and willing to try different experiences. This includes participating in activities and events around the university community. “I strive to be the best, not only in my studies but also in school activities as much as possible so that I can gain a lot of experience in the process, which will also be good for my resume. ” said Ting. “I define myself as a sociable person, but at the same time I am diverse, so throughout my life I have joined so many clubs to get to know different new things and make lots of friends. Ting is already looking ahead to what he will do after graduating from Middlesex University. He has various business ideas for the future, including opening a restaurant, but his focus is on education. He plans to transfer to a four-year school to earn his bachelor’s degree, and someday at Harvard Business School. thinking about.
“I have always been brainstorming my business ideas and developing them in the United States,” he said. “I am still young, so I would like to strengthen my entrepreneurial abilities and gain experience as I move forward in life.”
