Cardiff Rugby head coach Matt Sherratt has been suspended and fined after his interaction with referee Mike Adamson was deemed inappropriate.

The URC statement confirming Sherratt’s sanction did not go into details of the exchange, but the Cardiff manager admitted his actions were “not appropriate”.

Matt Sherratt suspended and fined

Sherratt took issue with the referee’s behavior during last week’s 19-17 defeat to Ulster in Belfast.

The match was controversial, with many onlookers believing Cardiff should have been awarded a penalty try for the actions of Cormac Iztyuk in denying Thomas Young’s try.

Cardiff were then denied the winning try by a deliberate knock-on from Reece Carre, resulting in a penalty and Ulster’s victory.

Legal debate: Was Cardiff ‘robbed’ in Belfast?

Sherratt was given a 12-month suspended fine of £2,500 and Cardiff Rugby was also given a 12-month suspended fine of £5,000.

If he violates the rule again, he will be suspended for one game and an additional five games. He also plans to take part in an online refereeing course.

Nigel Owens comments on Ulster’s controversial try-saving ‘kick’ against URC

URC statement

A URC statement read: “Cardiff Rugby head coach Matt Sherratt will today receive a one-match sideline ban for the match against Edinburgh.

“This is the result of a disciplinary action relating to an interaction between Sherratt and the match referee (Mike Adamson) during the 14th rugby match between Ulster and Cardiff.

“Sherratt has accepted that his actions were not appropriate and will serve a six-game ban starting today and a five-game suspension for 12 months. Sherratt played 80 minutes. During the match, you will be allowed to sit in the stands and enter the changing rooms.

“In addition, he will take part in an online refereeing course and will be fined a suspension of £2,500 for 12 months, while Cardiff Rugby will also be fined a suspension of £5,000 for 12 months.”
