Washington – U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin, Chris Van Hollen, and U.S. Representative Glenn Ivey (all Democrats, Maryland) Highlighted $3,423,000 in federal direct investments to improve the health of the Anacostia River, improve stormwater infrastructure, and reduce flooding across three communities in Prince George’s County.

“Water is our most precious commodity and it must be clean and safe for everyone. In too many areas of Prince George’s County, old and dilapidated infrastructure results in unsafe drinking water and It is causing damaging flooding that puts communities at risk.” Senator Cardin said. “Prince George’s County municipalities are leading projects to protect their water and their communities, and Team Maryland supports their efforts. It will help us build on the progress we have made and demonstrate our continued partnership with federal and local governments to support our communities.”

“Protecting water quality and improving flood resilience is critical to the health and safety of our communities. These direct investments will strengthen local stormwater infrastructure and reduce flood risk in Prince George’s County’s port cities and historic districts. , improve local water systems and protect wildlife habitat. We’re excited to see our local partners put these federal funds to work for the benefit of Marylanders. .” Sen. Van Hollen said.

“Climate change is real. It’s impacting communities in Maryland from Cottage City to Cheverly to Ocean City, and across the state and around the world. These community-funded projects are designed to improve water quality. and water security mitigation. Senator Cardin for his leadership in helping Prince George’s County residents make the Anacostia watershed healthier and homeowners and businesses safer storm water drainage management. Thank you, Congressman and Senator Van Hollen.” said Congressman Glenn Ivey (MD-04).

Federal lawmakers secured $225,000 for the Anacostia Water Association’s continued efforts to improve water quality and promote fish and vegetation health in the Anacostia River. Each year, more than 2 billion gallons of untreated sewage and stormwater are dumped directly into rivers that flow through areas of Washington, D.C., Prince George’s County, and Montgomery County. Lawmakers also provided $670,000 to Cottage City, a port city on the Anacostia River, to support efforts to address stormwater drainage issues that affect nearly half of the town’s households.

“Today is an important occasion for the City of Bladensburg as we celebrate two significant awards for the disbursement of federal funds in our port city. We recognize the dedication and hard work of Sen. Ben Cardin and Sen. Chris Van Hollen for their tireless efforts to secure federal resources that strengthen critical jobs and services within our local communities. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to our members. Their unwavering commitment will ensure that our port city and its residents continue to thrive.” said Takisha James, Mayor of Bladensburg.

The Town of Cheverly received $1,688,000 to upgrade its stormwater drainage system and develop a flood mitigation plan to prevent damage to homes and businesses following unprecedented flooding in September 2020 .

I am deeply grateful for your efforts. ” said Cheverly Mayor Casey Munyene. “I am deeply grateful to Senators Ben Cardin, Chris Van Hollen, Congressman Glenn Ivey, and the Maryland team for their unwavering support. Committed to building a strong future, Earth Day events on April 22, 2024 will strengthen Cheverley’s capacity to address stormwater management in the town and move towards environmental stewardship and community resilience. This represents a very important step.”

The City of Bowie received $840,000 to replace aging lift pump assemblies on which our current water supply relies and ensure a safe and reliable water supply for our residents.

“We are extremely grateful for the many tenacious efforts of Senator Cardin and Senator Van Hollen to provide the City of Bowie with the funding it needs to improve its aging water facilities. They are a team and are always invested in the lives of their residents. Their efforts will not go unnoticed.” said Bowie Mayor Tim Adams.
