Earlier this week, Michigan State football head coach Sherone Moore disagreed, saying there had been a delay in hiring reporters. Moore talked about how the Wolverines were trying to find the right fit, and now we know what he meant.
At least we now know why Moore felt Michigan’s football recruiting efforts weren’t as slow as some thought. The press conference came shortly after the Wolverines signed top-40 overall recruit Nate Marshall in the 2025 class.
Marshall is the No. 4 defensive lineman in the 2025 class and is just shy of being a five-star. Michigan football needs more top-100 talent, but Marshall is off to a good start. A good follow-up for him could also be acquiring four-star running back Marquise Davis from Ohio State.
NFL teams, and perhaps some teams at the college level, don’t value running backs as much as they used to, but that’s not the case with Michigan State. The Wolverines have a 1,000-yard rusher in three consecutive seasons. Donovan Edwards will finish fourth.
The Wolverines’ position with four-star running back Marquise Davis from Cleveland has improved greatly since Tony Alford was hired as Michigan’s running backs coach. Davis is ranked No. 166 overall, according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. The No. 7 ranked player in Ohio has an offer from the Buckeyes. He also ranks 11th among 2,025 running backs.
Davis also has two crystal ball projections for Michigan football. 247 Sports’ Allen Trew and Tom Roy, who each focus on the Midwest, gave the Wolverines a crystal ball to land Davis on Tuesday. No one has done it yet. None of the Michigan reporters were there, but according to a post on this message board by the Wolverines’ man EJ Holland, that seems to be the design.
I don’t understand why some people wouldn’t want a crystal ball. No Michigan reporter, player or program, has projected Davis to UM yet.
Perhaps it is trying to put a lid on a promise of silence or preparing to make an announcement. You never know what will happen during recruitment.
