Opinion | History education must be protected from Iowa Republicans

Historical knowledge is invaluable, but the Iowa Republican Party is trying to take it away from students.

On April 17, the Iowa House and Senate approved House File 2545, a bill that would require new themes in the social studies curriculum for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The bill is currently in the governor’s office as part of a larger bill. These themes include a focus on “Western Civilization” and are supported by Citizens United, a national organization whose mission is to prevent education from being used as a “recruitment vehicle for the progressive left.” ing.

Upon closer inspection, it is clear that the result of this bill will be a misrepresentation of American history based solely on delusion. I hope Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has the rationale to veto this bill.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Schuyler Wheeler (R-Hull), was quoted as saying, “If you’re in America, you need to know our history and traditions.” des moines register. “You need to know Western civilization, and you need to know what this bill says.”

I wholeheartedly agree with Wheeler. People need to know about America’s history and heritage. However, I am concerned that the history and heritage taught through this proposed curriculum will be a facile, dishonest, and ignorant perspective that will be harmful to marginalized students. .

But don’t take that from me. Received from the National Council on Social Studies. The National Social Studies Council, representing more than 10,000 U.S. educators, blasts Citizens United’s proposed curriculum, entitled “American Born Right” and containing alarming statements such as: I am against it. We love the richness of humanity and regret every concept, fact, and individual we were unable to include. ”

Don’t be fooled. The Alliance’s omission of this unnamed content is not due to simple circumstances. It was a conscious choice made to advance an agenda based on lies. Whether they realize it or not, the Iowa lawmakers who work to shield people’s eyes and brains from the honest history of America and Western civilization are deathly afraid of empathy.

Republicans cannot dispute historical facts. They fear that if people learn about the ugly parts of American history, they will become Uncle Sam’s blind servants. The only weapon they have left is to manipulate our education about that history until it looks beautiful.

“Indoctrination” is perhaps the most widely misunderstood term that pops up everywhere in modern politics. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, indoctrination is defined as “to instill an opinion, point of view, or principle, usually partisan or sectarian.”

When students are indoctrinated, they are not given the opportunity to learn anything that might shake their beliefs from the main content being taught.

Critical thinking requires having knowledge of all available facts and factors about something and then making a fair judgment. This proposed Western-centered curriculum does not provide students with this opportunity.

According to the United Nations, an accurate history of the United States includes teaching about the deep systemic racism that still exists and the mountains of evidence supporting it.

These politicians are trying to prevent people from learning about our true history because they fear that people’s basic empathy will undermine their patriotism.

It’s almost laughable how hypocritical this whole situation is. According to NBC, conservatives often blame countries like North Korea and ideologies like communism for refusing to teach accurate history.

How is this bill essentially different? If a similar bill were proposed by the Chinese government, the outcry from Republicans would be deafening.

Again, I see no empirical argument from conservatives regarding the accuracy of history that should be taught. I have nothing but concerns about what education means to patriotic Americans.

If we have to ignore history to advance an ideology, we are wrong. Complete stop.

I feel sorry for the students of Iowa who are at the mercy of these numb skulls who cannot accept that their glorious homeland is not the beacon of human rights they have always assumed it to be.
