Former world champion Magnus Carlsen, who was asked to evaluate the field of eight athletes in the open section, said he could not imagine Gukesh beating the contenders. “I see him in the +2 to -5 range (at the end of the tournament). He’s definitely going to win at least a few games, but he’s also going to lose pretty badly. “I don’t think so, but I also don’t think he’ll do too well. He’s not ready to make the leap yet. It’s likely that something bad happened to him.”
