Noisy M&N Repair and Auto in Port Arthur

The owners of M&N Repair and Automotive Shop say they don’t run their equipment or vehicles overnight.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas — Residents along Second Avenue in Port Arthur say the noise from M&N Repairs and Automotive is keeping them up at night.

One of the neighbors raised concerns with the city council.

Jason Herrera played videos of M&N repairs and the noise coming from cars to City Council members.

Herrera says his block was quiet until a few years ago.

“We’ve been working on this problem for years,” Herrera said. “They work late and make a fuss even at 3 o’clock or 1 o’clock. There are no rules.”

Herrera and her neighbors said loud noises from mechanical equipment occur frequently day and night.

“One night they were working and they were just revving the motor as loud as they could,” resident Mindy Walters said. “And I asked them if they could rev the truck up, because it was already 3 a.m.”

The shop, located a few doors down, repairs 18-wheelers and dump trucks. Owner Miguel Lopez said his team only works during business hours.

“I start working from a little after 7:30 a.m. until 7 p.m.,” Lopez said. “On rare occasions, I may work until 7:30 or 8 p.m.”

Lopez said he never left the equipment running overnight and no neighbors complained directly to him.

“We don’t have vehicles driving here at night or at 1, 2, 3 o’clock in the morning. What can I say?” he said. “That’s not true.”

As feelings of frustration mounted, Herrera went to the City Council on Tuesday to make his case known to the city.

“So, all the neighbors are complaining. So I’m going to the city to bring this issue to their attention and see what they’re going to do about this and find a solution to this problem. I went there for the sake of it,” he said.

The City Council said the city attorney will work with him to review the city’s noise ordinance.

“We hope the city will work with us to reach an agreement,” Herrera said.

Lopez said he is ready to cooperate with the city.

“We will cooperate if the city tells us the business hours,” he said.
