Theater review: Not everyone will be “hooked” by Alicia Keys’ Broadway musical ‘Hell’s Kitchen’

If you could close out Alicia Keys’ big semi-autobiographical musical on Broadway with her hit song, which one would it be? Of course, it would have to be “Empire State of Mind.” Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy said it’s a perfect analogy for the show, which is as predictable as an R train being delayed due to a signal problem. “Hell’s Kitchen” is a youth musical about Ali, a 17-year-old piano genius. It features great songs old and new by Ari, who won her 16 Grammy Awards, and a great cast, but there are only a few very safe elements. A story that tries to make it seem like something more important than it really is.

Will we see a “super bloom” in California this year? Here’s what you need to know

Carpets of yellow, orange and gold flowers are beginning to cover Southern California’s vast deserts, the Bay Area’s dramatic cliffs and even fields near Los Angeles International Airport. But it won’t be a “superbloom” like the one seen across the Southwest last year. Scientists do not agree on a single definition. Superblooms usually refer to low-lying desert areas. Spring wildflowers typically peak in April, but at higher elevations they can continue to bloom until late spring. So far, this year’s blooms aren’t as vibrant or lush as the ones that swept across California after the drought-inducing rains of 2023.
