April 16th stock market highlights: Benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty ended lower on Tuesday. The market continued its downward momentum for the second consecutive day amid continued geopolitical uncertainty.
The BSE Sensex closed at 72,943.68 levels, down 0.53% or 456 points, while the NSE Nifty 50 closed at 22,147.90 levels, down 0.56% or 124.60 points.
On the BSE, HUL and Titan were the top gainers, jumping 1.7% and about 1.5%, respectively. Infosys, on the other hand, closed just 3.6% lower ahead of its financial results for the fiscal year ending March 2024, scheduled to be announced this Friday.
Eicher Motors, Divis Labs, ONGC and HDFC Bank were among the top gainers among the Nifty 50 stocks, each gaining more than 1% in trading on Tuesday, April 16. Demand for small-cap stocks increased across the market. The NSE’s small cap index ended the day 0.5 per cent higher, while the mid cap index fell just 0.1 per cent after a choppy day’s trade. Exide Industries, Titagarh Wagons, GE Shipping, Cochin Shipyard, Radico Khaitan, GSPL were the top small cap stocks that rose by up to 15% on his NSE on Tuesday, April 16th.
Sector-wise, the Nifty IT index fell nearly 3%, followed by Nifty PSU Bank, which fell nearly 0.9%. The market will also be closed on Wednesday, April 17 due to Ram Navami’s circumstances.
