Old Time Grocery’s shrimp po-boys are extremely popular, accounting for 60 percent of sales, said president Ross Murphree.

“It allows us to stay in business,” he told Jean Swift on the Discover Lafayette podcast.

You can listen to their conversation here.

This iconic Lafayette restaurant is also known for catering and providing meals to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s athletic teams, serving up to 1,500 lunches per day during the football team’s summer camp. You may also prepare a bag. ”

The staff makes about 700 sandwiches each day Monday through Thursday, and up to 1,000 on Fridays. He said business doubles during Lent, with up to 2,000 shrimp being stocked on Fridays and using 600 pounds of Gulf white shrimp each time.

Old Time Grocery was an actual grocery store with a small delicatessen space until Murphree’s father, Glenn, purchased it in 1982. Glenn borrowed $8,000 from his father and another $8,000 from the bank to make the purchase, even though he didn’t have much experience in the food industry. Murphree said.

Old Tyme Grocery has been recognized for excellence by national publications, including #1 Budget Dining in America by TripAdvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Awards and #2 Best Po’boys in Louisiana by USA Today.

The Murphree family also owns Sandra’s Cafe and Health Food Store in Lafayette and BJ’s Sandwich Shop in Broussard.
