Sydney commuters can look forward to safer, smoother journeys through the busy Western Distributor thanks to a new initiative by Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW). The introduction of cutting-edge smart motorway technology is expected to transform traffic management between Sydney Harbor Bridge and Anzac Bridge, benefiting the 130,000 motorists who travel the route each day.
This innovative plan includes the introduction of digital signage that can provide real-time updates on road accidents and speed limit changes. This digital infrastructure not only quickly informs drivers of road conditions, but also reduces the time taken by automatic accident detection systems to respond to breakdowns and traffic jams.
The inspiration behind this initiative comes from the successful introduction of smart motorway technology on the M4 in 2021. Since implementation, the number of collisions has decreased by 25% and travel times have improved by 20%. Additionally, incident response and handling time was halved, demonstrating the tangible benefits of such an advanced traffic management system.
Future installations will see variable digital signs installed on new and existing gantries and sign bars along the 5.5km stretch between Anzac Bridge and Harbor Bridge. This strategic placement ensures drivers receive important and up-to-date information where they need it most.

To achieve this, 21 locations have been identified for new infrastructure. This effort also includes integrating operations with the nearby He Rozelle interchange, further enhancing network resiliency and efficiency.
TfNSW Deputy Commissioner Camilla Drover said: “Smart motorway technology will provide motorists with vital real-time information about Western Distributor traffic conditions, enabling safer and more stable motorway driving. We will tell drivers the best way to get around.” The technology also enables faster response to incidents by relaying speed and safety information to direct drivers to affected parts of the corridor. This reduces collisions, improves safety and provides highway users with an improved and smoother driving experience. ”
TfNSW is aware that there may be disruption during the installation and plans to carry out most of the work overnight to minimize inconvenience to motorists. Temporary traffic changes and diversions will be made as necessary to ensure the upgrade progresses efficiently with minimal disruption.
The last quarter of 2024 has been allocated for the operationalization of this project. By then, Sydney’s Western Distributor will be equipped with cutting-edge technology aimed at significantly improving safety, easing congestion and providing commuters with a more reliable driving experience. It will be.
