Red Sox season trending toward disaster with Rafael Devers’ latest update

Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers is suffering from soreness in his left shoulder and will not be able to help the team at full capacity this season. Devers asked to sit out Thursday night’s game against the Baltimore Orioles to rest his sore shoulder.

According to MassLive.com’s Chris Cotillo, Red Sox manager Alex Cora hasn’t ruled out the possibility of Devers having to go on injured reserve due to this issue. Cora noted that Devers was clearly in pain.

Cotillo reported Cora’s comments about Devers before Thursday’s series finale against the Orioles.

“He’s been battling his shoulder,” Cora said. “You can tell by the swing. Just give him one day. I hope that’s what he needs and we’ll go from there.”

Cora said if Devers has to go on injured reserve, so be it.

“We’ll see how it goes. But it’s too early to struggle. I think so. He’s too important to us to hone his swing and make things worse.” felt he needed the whole day yesterday, so we decided to give him the whole day today. If he needs the 1st, 2nd, 3rd (Sun) A stint would be fine. We have to deal with this.”

The Red Sox must play it safe with Devers and allow him to heal from his shoulder issue. However, staying on the injured list for any length of time would be a disaster for the Sox.

Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story has been placed on the disabled list after it was announced that he would undergo surgery at the end of the season to repair his dislocated left shoulder. Story dislocated his shoulder diving for a ball in Anaheim on April 5. Dr. Neil El-Atrache is scheduled to perform the surgery on Friday in Los Angeles.

Second baseman Vaughn Grissom started the season on the IL due to groin and hamstring injuries, but is close to hitting the ground running. With Story’s injury, the Red Sox could use Grissom’s bat right away. Grissom could stay at AAA Worchester for up to 20 days for rehabilitation.

Outfielder Rob Refsnyder could return soon after rehabbing from a pinky finger injury.

Additionally, pitcher Chris Murphy, who transitioned from starting pitcher to multi-inning relief pitcher, underwent successful left ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction and is not scheduled to return to the Sox until 2025. Former closer Liam Hendricks hopes to be able to play for the Red Sox around November 2020. Trade deadline after UCL surgery. Starting pitcher Lucas Giolito underwent UCL surgery in March and will be out until 2025.

Hopefully, the Red Sox get some good news on Devers and the team can avoid another disaster.
