Austin, Texas – Identity and Physical Access Control Solution Provider hiding Released 2024 State of Physical Access Control ReportAccording to the company’s announcement, it has identified “five major trends that will shape the future of access control.”

The report, produced by IFSEC Global in partnership with HID, surveyed more than 1,200 security professionals around the world and was created to “paint a picture of an industry undergoing profound transformation,” according to the release.

The study, conducted between November 2023 and January 2024, uncovered five trends:

1. Mobile access credentials and digital IDs will become prevalent

According to a statement from HID, “While physical IDs remain prevalent in the access control industry, there is no doubt that mobile access credentials and digital IDs are rapidly gaining popularity.”

According to the report, nearly two in five organizations (39%) are currently actively using mobile ID, with respondents citing touchless/contactless solutions (48%) and mobile access (44%) as the two biggest trends shaping the access control industry.

2. Open Standards for Physical Access Will Drive the Smart Buildings Phenomenon

Open standards will be a key driver for more integrated security solutions, and physical access control data will not only determine who is allowed into a building, but also help determine how to most effectively use that building.

As the report shows, nearly half of organizations (48%) already have access control/badge scanning systems in place to monitor building usage throughout the day, at least to some extent. Additionally, 43% of respondents said smart buildings and flexible workspaces were among the top three trends shaping the overall access control industry.

Integration with other business functions was cited as another key trend by one in three respondents (32%).

3. Sustainability-driven business decisions are on the rise

Sustainability plays a key role in access control, with almost two-thirds (63%) of respondents saying that sustainability officers have some influence or are fully consulted when it comes to upgrading physical access control systems.

4. Artificial intelligence for analytics is growing in popularity

As AI technology and expertise develop, the use of artificial intelligence features in physical access control is becoming increasingly common. When asked if they were considering incorporating AI/machine learning into their access control solutions, 38% said they were (although the same percentage of respondents were unsure of the benefits). Only 23% said they had no plans to incorporate AI technology.

5. Biometric adoption will grow – especially for contactless physical access

The biometric authentication market is growing rapidly. By 2031, the global market for biometric authentication is expected to reach $136.18 billion. Meanwhile, the global market for facial recognition alone is projected to grow from $3.83 billion in 2020 to $16.74 billion by 2030, representing a CAGR of 16% from 2021 to 2030.

All data cited in this press release is from the complete report, which provides in-depth analysis of what is driving the current and future physical access control industry.
