The global energy landscape is undergoing major changes, with renewable energy sources becoming increasingly important in the fight against climate instability.

The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) “Renewables 2023” report highlights a significant increase in renewable electricity capacity, reaching an estimated 507GW in 2023, a staggering 50% increase from 2022.

This growth is largely due to strong policy support in over 130 countries, signaling a major shift in global energy trends.

China in particular is leading the way, with its solar power generation market expanding by 116% and its wind power generation market expanding by 66%.

Looking ahead, the report predicts that solar PV and wind will account for the majority of renewable energy capacity growth over the next five years, accounting for a record 96% of new installations.

This advantage is driven by the falling cost of electricity generation, which in many countries now costs less to generate than fossil and non-fossil fuel alternatives.

Moreover, supportive policies will continue to strengthen these sectors and ensure that renewables remain a key element of the global energy transition.

Pioneer in the expansion of renewable energy

China’s renewable power capacity growth is expected to triple over the next five years compared to the past five years, accounting for 56% of global growth.

This rapid growth is being driven by the country’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero by 2060, underpinned by the 14th Five-Year Plan and full use of locally manufactured equipment and low-cost financing.

China is expected to install nearly four times as much renewable energy capacity as the European Union and five times as much as the United States during this period.

Global forecast and regional highlights

The report noted that renewable energy capacity additions will continue to grow, with large contributions from regions such as the United States and the European Union, due to policy incentives such as the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in the United States and various decarbonization and energy security measures in the EU.

India is also showing promising growth thanks to gradual policy improvements, while Latin America is benefiting from rising retail prices in countries such as Brazil and supportive policies for large capacity.

Overcoming challenges for faster growth

Despite the positive outlook, the report also identifies several challenges that need to be addressed to accelerate the growth of renewable energy.

These include policy uncertainty, underinvestment in grid infrastructure, permitting delays and difficulties obtaining financing in developing countries.

The IEA highlights that addressing these challenges could lead to a 21% increase in renewable energy capacity by 2028, enabling a smoother and faster transition to a sustainable energy future.

Startups are at the forefront of this green revolution, developing innovative solutions that harness the power of the sun, wind and water to create sustainable sources of energy.

These renewable energy startups are not only addressing environmental challenges, they are also creating economic opportunity and promoting energy independence.

In this post, we highlight startups that are making a big impact through their groundbreaking work in renewable energy.
