Warren Buffett says it takes 'five minutes' to know if an investment is worth it

Warren Buffett says it takes ‘five minutes’ to know if an investment is worth it

Warren Buffett, the famous CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, has a straightforward approach to investment decisions that appeals to many.

Buffett once claimed he could make a decision on a potential investment “in five minutes.” This ability to make quick decisions stems from his philosophy, which he explained at the 2008 Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting: “If you can’t make a decision in five minutes, you can’t make it in five months. You’re not going to learn enough in the next five months to make up for your shortcomings in your first investment.”

For Buffett, clarity and simplicity are essential. If an investment can’t be immediately understood, further analysis is useless. Buffett, along with his late business partner Charlie Munger, maintained a simple decision-making process: “get in/get out/it’s too hard.” This mindset meant avoiding opportunities that were too complicated to understand right away.

He and Munger emphasized understanding a company’s intrinsic value before considering price. They avoid complex industries that they cannot easily understand and focus on estimating the intrinsic value of companies that they do understand. This disciplined approach ensures that their investments are based on solid knowledge and understanding.

According to CNBC, Buffett once said, “Never invest in a business you don’t understand,” and this principle has guided his investment strategy, leading him to avoid industries he doesn’t fully understand, such as technology.

The key to Buffett’s success has been his strategy of making fast, well-informed decisions based on simple, clear investment opportunities within his field of expertise. His ability to make sound investment choices quickly, without overanalyzing or straying from his field of expertise, highlights his vast experience and commitment to fundamental investment principles.

While there’s no doubt that Buffett’s approach has been successful, it’s important to remember that he’s a seasoned investor with a deep understanding of the markets, and he freely admits that the average person shouldn’t try to pick stocks in the same way.

Buffett recommends most investors focus on index funds, which offer a diversified, low-risk way to participate in the stock market.

A financial advisor can help you create an investment strategy that suits your specific needs and risk tolerance.
