For a team coming off seven straight losing seasons, Colorado’s football program is one of the most polarizing in the country. The Buffaloes, who went 4-8 last year, will move into the Big 12 next fall under the guidance of head coach Deion Sanders, who played in the Big 12, their home from 1948 to 2010. With Big 12 media days wrapping up on Wednesday and Sanders finally speaking to the media, attention is quickly turning to the sidelines as the 2024 season approaches.
Colorado football coach Deion Sanders discusses Buffaloes’ situation heading into next fall
Regardless of their record, the Colorado Buffaloes will be a must-watch team on television every week next season. Led by coach Deion Sanders, his son, quarterback Shedul Sanders, and two-way superstar Travis Hunter, Colorado has been in the spotlight every week. Last year, Sanders’ first season on the roster, was no exception, with many in the national media dissecting the Buffaloes’ wins and losses throughout the season. But Sanders believes he is being held to a different standard than other teams at the FBS level.
Deion Sanders doesn’t like to talk about the culture of the program, but he spoke about the process at Colorado and his expectations for the Buffaloes at Big 12 media day.

“I’m measured on a different basis. My wins are totally different than your wins. Your wins are just measured on football. So I have to start teaching them about education and academics and stuff. I have to teach those things to help them understand the bigger possibilities. If you don’t win nine games, your GPA goes down. You don’t have a high GPA and you lose eight more games. You can’t afford not to get high school players and you have guys coming out of the portal going to prison. My wins are different. We have to win in all areas. That’s how we’re going to be measured and I’m OK with that.”
Sanders stressed that his time at Colorado has led to the team being over-analyzed in every aspect of the game, including academics, but the forward reiterated that he remains “calm” even with the added pressure, something he believes he’s felt since his collegiate playing days with the Florida State Seminoles in 1985.
Sanders praises Travis Hunter, looks forward to 2024 campaign
Coach Prime, Deion Sanders, will enter his second year with the Colorado football program next fall. The team underwent a disappointing 4-8 season last year, but two-way player Travis Hunter was named an All-American after 57 catches and three interceptions. Sanders has high hopes for Hunter as he enters his second year in Boulder, Colorado.
“He’s something you’ve never seen in college football. Charles Woodson was him. Champ Bailey was him. Those guys are unbelievable… But (Travis) is the best wide receiver in college football and the best cornerback in college football.”
Hunter recorded 57 receptions for 721 yards and five touchdowns in nine games, including 11 receptions for 119 yards in the season opener against the TCU Horned Frogs. Hunter contributed to the win and also recorded an interception. Defensively, he finished the 2023 season with 30 tackles, five passes defended, three interceptions and two TFLs.
Sanders is also excited about his second year with the Buffaloes, saying, “I see the enthusiasm and passion in our young guys and I can’t wait for you guys to get a chance to see that. So I’m very optimistic about what we have.”
