President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval of the creation of a new Ministry of Livestock Development has sparked reactions on social media. The President made the announcement on Tuesday at the State House, Abuja, when he inaugurated the Renewed Hope Livestock Reform Implementation Committee and assumed his position as Chairman.

He said the measure was aimed at stopping frequent clashes between herders and farmers which have led to destruction of lives and property across the country.A motion of urgent national importance has been tabled by 88 Members of the House of Representatives calling on the Federal Government to suspend the implementation of the Samoa Agreement until all contentious clauses in the agreement are addressed and codified.

The federal government has faced criticism since the signing of the agreement, with many Nigerians expressing concern about provisions in the agreement that could advance LGBTQ rights in contradiction to Nigeria’s 2014 law banning same-sex marriage and homosexual relationships.

On Tuesday, Representative Aliyu Madaki highlighted Article 2, Clause 9 of the Samoa Convention, which emphasises gender equality, saying it was a Trojan horse that could undermine the country’s morals. Other members of the House of Representatives, both for and against, debated on the floor.

The Nigerian Bar Association has supported the Samoa Agreement signed by the Federal Government, saying that if the agreement had contained LGBTQ+ clauses, the association would have advised the government to reject the agreement.

The NBA said it was among the stakeholders requested by the Federal Government to consider the agreement before it was signed, adding that the Samoa Agreement recognises the primacy of Nigeria’s anti-same-sex marriage law and the 1999 Constitution, and therefore does not in any way undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has directed the state Hisbah Commission to crack down on organisations suspected of promoting and defending LGBTQ rights in the state.

The governor’s directive came amid rising tensions over the activities of a group known as the Women’s Initiative for Sustainable Empowerment and Equality, which is said to be promoting same-sex marriage in the state.

According to the state’s Commissioner of Information, their activities are in total violation of the state’s moral standards and are in violation of Sharia law.An official of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Idris Ahmed Gama, a medical officer at the Hisbah Board, was arrested on Monday for condemning the arrest of LGBTQ members.Gama denied being a member of the LGBTQ community and said he was only invited to a workshop by a human rights group, “Women’s Initiative for Sustainable Empowerment and Equality.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday paid tribute to his late mother with a stage performance titled “Abibatu Mogaji” in her honour at the State House, Abuja. The President’s mother, who passed away on June 15, 2013, at the age of 96, left a remarkable legacy of service to her family, the community, the less fortunate and the nation.

The President said he inherited his tenacity, determination and discipline from his strict and determined mother. During his presentation, the President said the entertainment industry deserves more attention and recognition because it revives history and educates the younger generation about past events.
