Southern Maryland – The Southern Maryland “Buying Local Guide” Farmers Market Edition has been updated for the 2024 season with the latest information on area farmers markets, courtesy of the Southern Maryland Agricultural Development Commission (SMADC), a division of the Southern Maryland Tri-County Council.

This guide is more than just a farm guide. It’s Southern Maryland’s go-to agricultural resource for the region’s freshest and finest harvests. It’s packed with farmers market listings for home-grown vegetables, fruits, herbs and more. Find delicious farm-made goods like local meats, seafood, cheeses, honey, jams, jellies, pickles, baked goods, artisanal beverages and more at a farmers market near you.

Get ready for some fun browsing! The Guide is available online in a “flip-book” format and is packed with interactive search features to give you easy access to farmers markets in your area and throughout the Metro DC region. Visit the “Get the Guide” page on SMADC.com to start exploring, and keep an eye out for future updates as we add sections for new specialty farms and producers.

SMADC also invites all Marylanders to support, celebrate and buy all things grown, harvested, produced, handcrafted and homemade in Maryland with its 2024 Buy Local Challenge celebration, celebrating Maryland farms, producers, artisans and farm-hosted fun.

Capping off statewide Buy Local Week (July 19-28, 2024), enjoy a fun-filled summer evening with family and friends and support Maryland farmers and producers at the Buy Local Challenge Celebration hosted by Serenity Farm in Benedict, Charles County, Maryland on Monday, July 29 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

The family-friendly Buy Local Celebration will feature up to 50 vendors in a farmers’ market style setting, celebrating Maryland’s summer bounty. Shop and meet with makers and producers of Maryland farm-raised meat and dairy products, fruits and vegetables, flowers, local oysters, baked goods, jams and pickles, honey, farm-made soaps, fragrances and more. You’ll also discover creative local arts and crafts and taste handcrafted beverages from Maryland wineries, distilleries and breweries.

Admission is $5 (children 6 and under are free). Tickets can be purchased online or at the venue via PayPal until 4pm on Monday, July 29th. Admission includes a free insulated shopping tote (with ice to keep your purchases fresh), delicious oyster tastings (get a taste of local oysters at Hollywood Oyster Company), a free raffle with prizes generously donated by vendors, the fabulous Sattler Post Farm Clydesdale Carriage and Children’s Carriage, horseback rides on the adorable pony “Mary’s Go Round,” petting pens at Serenity Farm, and face painting.

Take a break from cooking in the evening and choose from local food trucks throughout the evening, featuring a variety of mouthwatering menus made with locally sourced ingredients to suit every taste. As you shop, drink and sample, relax in the shade of the hospitality tent and enjoy the views while talented trio “Chaptico Songworks” tell musical tales and legends of Southern Maryland traditions.

Visit BuyLocalChallenge.com to purchase celebration tickets and check back daily for updates on participating vendors, entertainment and activities. Be sure to check out Buy Local Week resources and opportunities for Marylanders to shop and enjoy Maryland farm and food products.

SMADC’s Southern Maryland “Local Produce Buying Guide” is available now on the “Get the Guide” page on SMADC.com. If you’re a farm or producer in the Southern Maryland area, don’t miss your opportunity to be featured in the guide’s upcoming special section listings. For more information, email info@smadc.com. The application form and submission criteria can be found on the “News and Events” page on SMADC.com.
