It’s Joe Biden versus the world. That’s not great, but it may be the president’s last, best hope.
Biden is enduring one of the worst periods of political turmoil imaginable, with serious questions being raised about his fitness to be president by the media, infuriated Democrats and party donors. His responses have ranged from clumsy to insulting, further emboldening those desperate to defeat Donald Trump.
But Biden may have accidentally found a way forward: In a Trump-style move, the president is now presenting himself as the underdog taking on Washington’s elites.
Never mind that polls have long shown voters to be concerned about Biden’s age. Americans love their cantankerous candidates. And, whether that’s real or fake, Biden has long thrived in that role. In fact, suddenly this week, the president seems to care.
I have serious doubts about Biden’s ability to campaign and serve another four years, and even if he came up with a winning message, I certainly doubt he would be able to communicate it effectively.
But as time passes, it’s becoming more and more likely that Biden will remain the Democratic nominee. He holds all the cards, his position is solid, and it’s unlikely that members of his own party will continue to openly question his eligibility for much longer.
The stakes are high for Biden and the country if he continues to run the campaign, but to have a chance to win, he needs to be competitive. Democrats can only hope that their hostility will finally wake Biden up to the fight he faces.
